As time went on motorcycle clothing
changed. It became more adapted to the needs and individual tastes of the
rider. Motorcycles started going faster and faster causing wind burns so
clothing was designed to stop this. Long wristed gauntlets were designed to
prevent wind from blowing the coat sleeves of rider. People in the 20th
century looked at the clothing that horseback riders wore and they adapted it
to riding the motorcycle. High boots protected the rider from the heat of the
motor as well as from debris that flew up from the road. Harley Davidson had ads in 1916 that stated “(here) is a natty suit, obtainable either
in government khaki or mole-skin cloth that is exactly what most riders want.
It incorporates several ideas that were suggested by men at the factory who
have had much experience in road riding under varying conditions.” Then Harley Davidson wrote to its
dealers that “The advantage to the dealer
of having his riders neatly dressed have been described so often that upon this
subject every-one undoubtly agrees. In line with our policy of practicing what
we preach we are seeking to co-operate with dealers in improving the style of
riding suits.” This was the start of the changing of motorcycle clothing. It stated out made out of khaki in order for riders not to stand out too much from anyone else. But as rides enjoyed the individuality of riding a new unique form of transportation they started wanting to dress individuality. Thus became the start of the change of motorcycle clothing. I have a picture to add to this as soon as I can get my computer to download it. For some reason it will not download. All the pictures and the information are courtesy of the Harley Davidson Company
