Biker Clothing in the 20th Century

Clothing years ago are no where near the same as it is now for Harley Davidson riders. In the first part of the 20th century the clothing was more formal. They actually wore suits, starched collar shirts for men. The women wore long skirts with flowing scarves. And back then they did not wear helmets. In researching why they dressed that way I found that it had to do with the business sense of Harley-Davidson in those days. So back in those days there was not leather riding gear that would appeal to the upper class people of society.  Motorcycles were new and people  did not know what to think of them.Riders did not yet have the image of the rebellious biker that we have today. Back  in those days in was inappropriate for woman not to wear stockings and it was also wrong for them to show bare arms in any thing other than a evening gown. So Harley -Davidson had to aim their advertising for people who wore the traditional style of clothing. Here is a picture of a couple  who are going for a ride. Check out the clothing they are wearing but also check out the motorcycle and the side car. Nothing like they look today.
